Self-tuning means it autoconfigures PID parameters on first run — saves the commissioning engineer a loop-tuning session on a multi-zone oven or kiln. The 50ms sampling speed governs how tightly it tracks a ramp/soak profile; for slow thermal processes like a water bath, a slower controller would do, but this one doesn't overshoot when the load changes fast.
