The Siemens 3SE5 series is a safety position switch with separate actuator, designed for monitoring the position of movable guards (doors, covers, hoods) on machinery. With over 850 variants, the 3SE5 is the safety-rated interface between the physical guard and the safety controller (3SK or safety PLC), ensuring the machine cannot operate when the guard is open.
How Position Switches Enable Machine Safety
A safety position switch consists of a switch body (mounted on the fixed frame) and a separate actuator (mounted on the movable guard). When the guard closes, the actuator enters the switch head and operates the positively-driven contacts. The positive-drive mechanism ensures that when the contacts open, they are physically forced apart — a welded contact cannot leave the safety circuit falsely closed. This meets the requirements of ISO 14119 for interlocking devices associated with guards.
