The Schneider Electric A9SCO440 is a 4-pole changeover switch from the Acti9 iSSW family, rated 40 A at 400/415 VAC. It's built to EN/IEC 60947-3 and AS/NZS 60947-3, which cover the performance and safety of disconnect, switch-disconnector, and changeover switches in industrial and commercial distribution. The utilisation categories — AC-23A for motor loads and AC-22A for mixed resistive and inductive loads — tell you it handles both motor starting and general switching without derating.
The 40 A rating is the operational current (Ie) at 400/415 VAC. In AC-23A duty it switches 15 kW at 415 V or 14.4 kW at 400 V — that's a 20-25 hp motor range. The AC-22A numbers are higher (23 kW at 415 V, 22.2 kW at 400 V) because mixed loads don't have the inrush of a motor start. Short-time withstand (Icw) is 0.8 kA for 1 second — enough to coordinate with a 40 A backup fuse or breaker, but not a main bracing rating.
Deployment and integration
At 70 mm wide (8 x 9 mm pitches) it occupies four standard modular spaces in an Acti9 enclosure. Screw terminals accept 1 to 16 mm² rigid or 1 to 10 mm² flexible — strip 12 mm, torque to 2.5 N.m. The toggle has three positions (white) with a padlock provision in the ON position and a contact position indicator. IP20 body, IP40 inside an enclosure — keep it behind a panel door.
