30 kW drive for HVAC and pumping — what the ratings mean
The ATV21WD30N4C is a 30 kW Altivar 21 AC drive from Schneider Electric, designed for asynchronous motors in variable-torque loads like fans, pumps, and compressors. The drive includes an integrated Class B EMC filter, which simplifies panel layout by eliminating the need for an external filter in most residential and light-industrial environments. It complies with EN 61800-3 category C1 and C2 for conducted and radiated emissions, so it's suited for both first-environment (domestic) and second-environment (industrial) installations without extra hardware.
Communication and control — Modbus plus building-automation option cards
The drive comes standard with a 2-wire RS-485 port using Modbus RTU protocol at 9600 or 19200 bps, supporting up to 247 addresses on the bus. This lets you daisy-chain multiple drives to a PLC or BMS controller without extra gateways. For building-management integration, the drive accepts optional communication cards for BACnet, LonWorks, Metasys N2, and Apogee FLN — common in HVAC central plants and chiller systems. The adjustable PI regulator handles closed-loop control for constant-pressure or constant-flow applications. Switching frequency is adjustable from 6 to 16 kHz; going above 8 kHz requires derating the output current. The drive can deliver 120% of nominal motor torque for 60 seconds — enough to get a loaded pump or fan up to speed without tripping.
Lifecycle and sourcing — mature product, quoted to order
The drive measures 28.3 x 11.2 x 12.4 inches (H x W x D) and mounts vertically (within ±10°). Plan for the heat-sink clearance and the 59.9 dB noise level if the drive is in a quiet occupied space.
