The Schneider BMEP586040S is a standalone safety processor in the Modicon M580 line, built for process control and safety control (SIL 3 per IEC 61508, up to SIL 4 per EN 50126). It hosts 64 MB of program memory and 16 MB dedicated to safety logic, plus 4 GB of data storage. The unit is powered from the rack backplane (300 mA at 24 VDC), so no separate power supply run is needed. It supports 31 remote I/O racks (X80 and Quantum) and 128 CIP safety devices via RIO and DIO scanner services, with dual Ethernet device ports and a service port.
Cybersecurity features are factory-integrated: Achilles Level 2 certification, embedded firewall, IPSec, SNMP logging, audit trail, and port hardening. This matters for sites requiring ISA/IEC 62443-3-3 compliance out of the box. The processor is conformal coated as standard, so it withstands corrosive gas environments (ISA S71.04 G3, IEC 60721-3-3 3C4) without an additional protective enclosure.
Integration Notes
Mounts in an M580 rack (up to 8 racks per system). IP20 rated — plan for enclosure protection against dust and contact. Shock tolerance 15 gn, vibration 3 gn; fine for general-purpose industrial floors but consider isolation for high-vibration rotating machinery. Application-specific I/O handled on the local rack: up to 216 channels for counters, motion control, SSI encoder, accurate time-stamping, serial link, or HART. The processor runs one master task, one periodic fast task, and one periodic safe task — no need for a separate safety controller. Memory split: 64 MB for program/data, 16 MB for safety program, and 1024 kB for safety data. The 4 GB flash data storage is expandable. MTBF is 775,000 hours.
