Motor circuit breaker for dedicated protection
The Schneider GV4PEM12N is a 3-pole motor circuit breaker in the TeSys GV4 range, rated 12.5 A continuous current with an electronic thermal-magnetic trip unit. It's sized for motors drawing up to 12.5 A and carries a breaking capacity of 100 kA at 240 V AC (IEC 60947-2), so it handles high-fault installations without external fuses for back-up protection.
Trip technology and protection precision
Unlike a simple thermal-magnetic breaker, the GV4PEM12N uses an electronic thermal-magnetic trip. That means the overload curve stays consistent across ambient temperature swings — no thermal drift from a bimetallic strip. The magnetic trip is fixed at 212 A (about 17x In), giving a fast short-circuit response without field adjustment. Phase failure sensitivity is built in, per IEC 60947-4-1: if one phase drops, the breaker trips, preventing single-phasing damage to the motor. Rated for continuous duty and classified as Category A per IEC 60947-2, so it's suitable for motor protection in AC-3 switching duty (40000 cycles at In/2 on 440 V).
Physical installation notes
The housing is IP40 (finger-safe) with an IK07 impact rating, acceptable for clean panel environments. Accepts any mounting orientation, operates up to 5000 m altitude, and extends 4.6 in deep on the bus—standard for a 3-pole molded-case frame. Wire terminals are EverLink BTR screw type. Top accepts 1.5–70 mm² solid or 1.5–50 mm² flexible; bottom accepts 2.5–95 mm² solid or 2.5–70 mm² flexible. Torque to 9 N·m for the main terminals. The toggle control is manual operation.
