Braking resistor for ATV 16 drives
The VW3A16702 is an enclosed braking resistor from Schneider Electric, designed as a Motor Control Accessory for the ATV 16 drive family. Rated at 100 Ohm with 120 W continuous power dissipation, it converts regenerative energy from a decelerating motor into heat, preventing DC-bus overvoltage trips on fast stops. The IP30 enclosure means it's protected against solid objects larger than 2.5 mm (tools, wires) but not against water ingress — install it inside a control cabinet or in a dry, sheltered location.
Physical fit and mounting
Dimensions are 2.7 in (68 mm) deep, 3.3 in (85 mm) wide, and 10.9 in (278 mm) tall — a compact footprint that fits alongside the drive in a standard enclosure. The 100 Ohm value is the resistance seen by the DC bus when the braking transistor switches on; matching this to the drive's braking module rating is critical — too low a resistance pulls excess current and can damage the chopper transistor.
