The VW3A7212 delivers 345 kW peak braking power and 200 kW continuous, sized for a 400 V drive system. The 1.2× overload protection means the unit can absorb the peak rating for the duration of a deceleration cycle without tripping — the continuous rating governs steady-state dissipative loads like dynamic braking on a conveyor or centrifuge. At 97% efficiency, the thermal loss to the cabinet is roughly 6 kW at full continuous load — that heat must be exhausted, not recirculated into the drive cubicle. IP20 means the unit is not sealed; it relies on cabinet airflow for cooling.
Cabinet fit and altitude derating
Standing 1037 mm tall on a 380 x 395 mm footprint, this is a floor-mount cabinet section, not a panel insert. Plan for bottom cable entry and top ventilation clearance. The associated fuse is 630 A at 1000 V — the fuse holder and cable cross-section need to match that rating. Above 1000 m operating altitude, derate the continuous braking current 5% per additional 1000 m. At 3000 m, that is a 10% cut — 180 kW continuous instead of 200 kW. Storage temperature range is -25 to 55 °C.
Lifecycle reality — obsolete and sourced
Schneider lists the VW3A7212 as obsolete. The unit is available through independent surplus and new-old-stock channels — quantities are lot-specific, confirmed at RFQ. No pin-compatible plug-in replacement exists; a system using this braking unit should be sourced as-is or the cabinet re-engineered around a current-generation unit.
