What this sensor is and what it's for
The XS508BLPBM12 is an inductive proximity sensor from TELEMECANIQUE's XS5 series – a shielded cylindrical M8 threaded body, PNP normally closed output, with an M12 quick-connector. It's built for sensing metal targets at short range: 2 mm max sensing distance. Out here in the grease that's a common fit for position monitoring on conveyor rollers, cylinder end stops, or part-present checks on a transfer line.
What the ratings mean for your BOM
Runs on 12-48V DC, which covers most PLC input ranges without extra power conditioning. The PNP NC output switches up to 200 mA – enough to drive a small contactor coil or PLC input direct. Note the NC output: if the sensor loses power or the target leaves the field, the output opens, which is a safe state for many stop circuits. IP65 and IP67 means it'll handle coolant splash and a hose-down on a washdown line. Stainless steel 303 body and nickel plating – will it survive the route? Yes, I've buried enough sensors to trust this one where corrosion is a factor.
Mounting and wiring notes
M8 threaded body (8 mm diameter), 62 mm overall height. Shielded design means it can be flush-mounted in metal without derating the sensing distance. 3-wire, PNP, M12 connector – standard 4-pin pinout. Strip and ferrule the leads, torque the M12 nut to hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Keep the cable away from high-current AC lines to avoid induced noise.
