The Siemens 5SL4420-0RC is a 4-pole miniature circuit breaker rated at 20 A with a Z characteristic and 10 kA breaking capacity. The Z trip curve is designed for semiconductor protection and sensitive electronic loads where the inrush is minimal but short-circuit protection must act fast — think rectifier inputs, DC power supplies, or control transformer primaries. The 10 kA interrupting rating at the rated voltage is the standard for downstream distribution in a commercial or light industrial panel; it coordinates with an upstream 25 kA or 36 kA main breaker without requiring a current-limiting device at every branch.
What the Z characteristic means for fit
The Z characteristic is the least common of the standard trip curves (B, C, D, Z). It trips magnetically between 2 and 3 times rated current (In), versus 3–5 In for B-curve or 5–10 In for C-curve. That means the 5SL4420-0RC will clear a short-circuit fault faster than a B or C breaker on the same 20 A frame, but it also means it must not be applied on circuits with motor-starting inrush or transformer magnetizing current — those loads would nuisance-trip it. The intended load is purely resistive or semiconductor-grade: PLC power supplies, DC bus capacitors, control transformers below 100 VA, or field-device loops where the wire run is short and the fault current is the only concern.
Panel integration notes
The 5SL4420-0RC snaps onto standard 35 mm DIN rail per EN 60715. Four-pole width occupies 72 mm (4 x 18 mm modular units). The busbar system is the same Siemens 5ST3 series used across the 5SL4 family — pin positions align for a 4-pole feed-through or a 4-pole + N configuration. Terminal capacity accepts up to 25 mm² conductor for the line and load sides. The toggle handle is padlockable in the OFF position for lockout/tagout compliance.
