What this position transmitter does on the line
The Festo SMAT-8E-S50-IU-M8 is a position transmitter designed for T-slot pneumatic cylinders, giving you a continuous analog feedback of the piston position over a 48 to 52 mm measuring range. It resolves travel down to 0.064 mm and tracks movement up to 3 m/s, so it nails the cure recipe on a press cycle or any closed-loop positioning task where you need to know exactly where the actuator is, not just that it reached an end stop. It outputs both a current signal (0.305 mA/mm sensitivity, max load 500 Ω) and a voltage signal (0.152 V/mm sensitivity, min load 2 kΩ), so you can wire it into a 4-20 mA analog input or a 0-10 V PLC card without an extra converter. The 15 to 30 VDC operating range covers standard 24 V control supplies with headroom for brownout conditions. Typical linearity error is 0.25 mm, and repetition accuracy holds to ±0.064 mm — consistent enough for a repeatable press cycle or a pick-and-place sequence. Ambient temperature range of -20 to 50 °C means it holds up to the steam and heat near a curing press, provided you keep the electronics out of direct steam impingement.
Typical scanning interval is 2.85 ms, fast enough for most motion control loops running at 1-2 kHz update rates. If you are replacing a unit that used a different output type (voltage vs current), verify the PLC input card matches the signal you intend to use — both outputs are active simultaneously, so you can leave one unterminated.
