What this head does on a limit switch
The Omron D4A0003N is a limit switch head from the D4A series, designed as a replacement or build-up component for the D4A1103N base switch. It uses a side-mounted roller lever plunger actuator with a Maintained action — meaning the contacts stay in their switched state after the actuator is released, until mechanically reset. The steel arm is fixed (non-adjustable) with a 0.57 in depth, and the plunger is also fixed. The Low Torque feature (1.77 in-lb operating torque) means this head trips with a light touch — useful on light-duty conveyor diverters or packaging-machine gates where a heavy cam would overshoot the target. The 70° overtravel gives the cam room to keep moving after the switch trips, reducing the risk of mechanical damage from over-rotation.
Where it goes — enclosure and environment
Rated IP67, so the head seals against dust ingress and temporary immersion — fine for washdown zones in food processing or outdoor conveyor gantries. The NEMA enclosure ratings (1, 2, 3, 4X, 5, 6P, 12, 13) cover indoor and outdoor use, including corrosion-resistant (4X) and oil-tight (12, 13) environments. Operating temperature spans -40 to 212 °F, which handles freezer lines and hot wash cycles. The 4° differential travel is the angular gap between make and break — tight enough for precise cam timing on indexing tables, but not so tight that vibration causes chatter. The directional movement is linear (plunger stroke), so the roller lever tracks a cam profile in one axis.
CSA and UL Listed approvals are on file, which covers North American panel builds requiring third-party certification.
