What this sensor is and what it does
The Omron E2BM18LS08M1C1OMI is an M18 cylindrical inductive proximity sensor from the E2B series, designed for flush mounting in metal. It detects ferrous targets up to 8 mm away — that's the standard sensing range for an M18 shielded sensor, meaning it can spot a bolt head or cam lobe passing within that gap without needing a non-metallic window in the mounting surface. The NPN normally-open output pulls low when a target is present, so it sinks current to ground through the load; common in PLC input cards that expect a sinking signal. Switching frequency of 500 Hz is fast enough for counting parts on a moderate-speed conveyor or detecting a rotating shaft keyway, but not for high-speed spindle monitoring.
Where you'd use it
IP67 rating means the brass housing and M12 connector survive washdown environments — packaging lines, food processing zones that aren't high-pressure spray, or outdoor conveyor sections under cover. The M18 thread is a standard mounting hole; flush-mount capability lets you embed it in a bracket or machine frame without worrying about the sensing field wrapping around the barrel. Operating range of -25 to 70 °C covers most factory-floor conditions short of an oven or freezer tunnel.
