Small-diameter inductive proximity sensor, 4 mm barrel, 2 mm range
The Omron E2E-S04N02-WC-C1 is a small-diameter inductive proximity sensor with a 4 mm outer diameter barrel (size 04) and a 2 mm sensing distance. This is a tight-fit sensor for detecting small metal targets in confined spaces — think cam lobes, gear teeth, or actuator positions where a standard 8 mm or 12 mm barrel won't fit. Output is DC 3-wire NPN open-collector, normally open — it sinks current to ground when a metal target enters the 2 mm detection zone. The NPN output mates directly with most PLC sinking inputs; the NO configuration means the output is off until the target is present. The sensor is unshielded, so the sensing field extends from the face and also slightly from the sides. This gives a longer range than a shielded version of the same barrel size, but requires clearance from surrounding metal — mounting in a steel block will reduce the effective range.
Stainless steel case, PVC cable — washdown capable
The case is SUS (stainless steel) threaded, which resists corrosion and stands up to washdown environments common in food processing, packaging, and automotive machining lines. The threaded barrel allows direct mounting into a 4 mm through-hole with a lock nut. Connection is a PVC pre-wired model (WC suffix) — a fixed cable, not a quick-disconnect. The PVC jacket handles oil and abrasion in industrial cable trays, but the cable is permanently attached; if it gets damaged, the whole sensor must be replaced. No connector swapping.
