The E2E-X2Y1-M4 shares the same 2 mm shielded sensing distance, M12 thread, and mechanical dimensions as this AC part but uses a DC output circuit (24-240V DC) with an M12 connector instead of a 2 m cable. The output type is the critical difference: the -M4 is DC-type, while the -X2Y1 is AC-type. A panel wired for AC 2-wire sensing will not communicate with a DC output without rewiring the sensor supply and loading.
