Proximity sensor for discrete presence detection
The Omron E2E-X8MD1S 2M is a current-production inductive proximity sensor in the E2E series, offering 8 mm unshielded sensing with a DC 2-wire normally open output. Rated for standard oscillation frequency, it includes a self-diagnosis function for output monitoring — useful for detecting sensor faults in safety-critical lines. Supplied with a 2 m PVC cable for direct termination; no connector or quick-disconnect option on this variant.
Not interchangeable with capacitive sensor E2KQ-X10ME1
Despite both being unshielded proximity sensors, the E2KQ-X10ME1 is a capacitive type with NPN-NO 3-wire output and 10–30 V supply, while the E2E-X8MD1S 2M is inductive with a DC 2-wire NO output. Rewiring is required if swapping between the two: the capacitive sensor uses a separate power and load wire, whereas the inductive 2-wire sensor is series-connected with the load.
Lifecycle & sourcing posture
This Omron E2E series sensor is sourced to order. Genuine parts carry consistent date codes and factory packaging.
Mounting & wiring considerations
Unshielded construction allows flush mounting in metal but reduces sensing distance — derate per Omron guidelines when embedded. 8 mm rated range assumes non-flush mounting in air. DC 2-wire NO: connect line (+) to brown, load to blue, return to supply common. Polarity must be observed; reverse connection may damage internal electronics. Self-diagnosis output (typically a low-level signal when sensor faults) can be wired to a PLC digital input for higher-availability diagnostics.
