5 mm sensing in an unshielded barrel
This Omron E2E2-X5MY2-US 2M is an unshielded inductive proximity sensor in the long-barrel E2E2 form factor, delivering a 5 mm sensing distance on mild steel. The unshielded body means the field projects from the face and wraps around the barrel sides — you get a wider detection zone than a shielded equivalent, but the sensor needs clearance from surrounding metal to avoid false triggers. The 5 mm range is typical for an M18 unshielded sensor, enough for detecting passing conveyor lugs or cylinder piston positions without contact. The output is normally closed (NC) on an AC 2-wire circuit — when the target is absent, the output conducts; when metal enters the sensing field, the output opens. This fail-safe wiring means a broken wire or sensor failure opens the circuit, which is the preferred configuration for safety-monitored stops or interlock loops where a loss of signal should halt the machine.
Cable and mounting constraints
The 2-meter integral cable is PVC-jacketed and terminates in bare leads — no connector to swap if the cable gets pinched. For a panel feed-through, budget a 20 mm knockout for the M18 barrel and allow 50 mm of clearance behind the barrel for the cable bend radius. The unshielded body requires a 3× sensing-distance gap (15 mm minimum) to any parallel ferrous structure; less than that and the sensor may latch on the surrounding steel.
