Integration brief
The Omron E2K-X8ME2 is a capacitive proximity sensor from the E2K-X series, delivering an NPN normally closed output at 8 mm unshielded sensing distance. No sensitivity adjustment needed — the circuit is factory-calibrated, so there is no pot to drift or mis-set during commissioning. Prewired with a 2 m cable, 3-wire DC 10-30 V, switching up to 200 mA. Sensing face is unshielded; the 18 mm diameter cylindrical plastic body with 80 mm height fits standard 18 mm mounting clamps. IP66 and NEMA 1, 4, 12, 13 cover washdown and indoor/outdoor installations. Indicator light on the body gives immediate visual confirmation of target presence — useful when troubleshooting in the racking or on the conveyor.
NPN vs. PNP — the sibling spec gap
The closest functional peer is the E2K-X8MF1, which is PNP normally open. Mechanically identical — same body, mounting, cable, and ratings — but the output circuit and contact form differ. Swapping from the ME2 to the MF1 requires a PLC input polarity change and logic inversion; it is not a bare drop-in. The E2K-X15ME1 provides 15 mm sensing distance with NPN NO output and a maximum operating temperature of 131 °F, compared to 158 °F for the E2K-X8ME2.
Compliance marks include CCC and CE. IP66 and NEMA 1, 4, 12, 13 enclosure ratings cover wet and dusty environments. The plastic housing and prewired cable simplify field installation — no connectors to seal.
