What this light curtain covers
The Omron F3SJ-A0245P20 is a Type 4 safety light curtain from the F3SJ-A series, rated for finger and hand protection with a 20mm detection capability. The 15mm beam pitch and 16 beams give it a 245mm protective height, meaning it covers a zone just under 10 inches tall — sized for guarding a small machine opening or a vertical access point on a pick-and-place cell. Operating range spans 0.2m to 9.0m, so it works both in tight reach-in applications and across wider access areas.
The 20mm detection capability is the key selection parameter. It catches fingers reaching into the hazard zone (finger-protection class per IEC 61496-2), so it replaces physical barriers on machines where an operator needs periodic access — assembly presses, packaging wrappers, small robot cells. The 15mm beam pitch is tighter than a 30mm hand-only curtain, which means fewer blind spots but also more beams to align during installation. Blanking and muting functions are built in, so the curtain can ignore fixed obstructions (a part fixture passing through the field) and automatically bypass during a defined material-handling cycle. That saves an external safety controller for simple muting applications.
Integration notes
Mounting: the curtain uses standard aluminum extrusions with end-cap brackets; the 245mm protective height fits within a 300mm machine opening. Cable exits from the bottom of the receiver — plan for a 50mm bend radius below the unit. The IP65 rating holds without a secondary housing, but the M12 connectors need to be torqued to 0.6 Nm to maintain the seal in washdown zones. Temperature range of -10°C to 55°C covers most factory-floor conditions, but derate the operating range by 10% above 40°C ambient. The 24VDC supply should be SELV-rated and capable of 0.5A inrush per curtain pair.
