What it is and what it guards
The Omron F3SJ-A0870N30 is a safety light curtain — a Type 4 optoelectronic protective device that creates an invisible infrared barrier across a machine access point. When any object larger than the 30 mm resolution breaks the beam, the safety outputs switch off, signaling the machine control system to stop hazardous motion. The 870 mm protected height covers a typical vertical opening for hand and finger access on assembly stations, packaging machines, or robotic cells.
What the key ratings mean for fit
The 30 mm resolution determines what the curtain detects — it catches fingers approaching the hazard zone (finger-protection class per IEC 61496-1), but will not reliably detect a single wire or thin tool. The 870 mm protected height defines the vertical span the curtain covers; for a taller opening, multiple units or a taller model in the F3SJ family would be needed. As a safety device, the F3SJ series is designed to meet SIL 3 / PL e / Category 4, which means a single fault cannot cause loss of the safety function — relevant for risk assessments under ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061.
Deployment context
The F3SJ-A0870N30 mounts via its extruded aluminum housing to machine frames or stands using the supplied brackets. The emitter and receiver columns are aligned opposite each other across the guarded opening. Power and safety output connections are made through M12 connectors — standard for industrial sensor wiring. The safety outputs (OSSDs) connect directly to a safety PLC, safety relay, or safety-rated drive input.
