What This Light Curtain Covers
Its 55 mm detection capability means it reliably catches a leg or torso entering the field, but it will not detect a hand or finger — that is the trade-off for a taller protective height at a lower beam count. With 45 beams at 50 mm pitch, it creates a 2220 mm protective curtain, covering the full height of a typical access area around a press, robot cell, or conveyor infeed. The operating range spans 0.2 m to 7.0 m, so it fits both short-reach guarding near the hazard and longer spans across a wider access point. Powered by 24 VDC, it integrates into standard safety circuits without a separate power supply. Built-in blanking and muting functions give flexibility to handle fixed obstructions (like a machine frame passing through the field) or temporary interruptions during material feed cycles, without tripping the safety output. These are configurable features that reduce nuisance downtime on automated lines.
Because this is a safety device, the documentation package — including the declaration of conformity, wiring diagram, and configuration manual — is essential for the machine's safety file. The F3SJ-A series is a mature, widely deployed platform, so compliance records (CE, UL, etc.) are well established and available through the Omron support network.
Installation Fit
Mounting columns and brackets for the F3SJ-A series are standard Omron accessories; the 2220 mm column height requires a rigid mount to maintain alignment over the full 7.0 m range. The emitter and receiver are wired separately back to a safety controller or relay — the 24 VDC supply is common, but the outputs (OSSD pairs) must go to a safety-rated input card or safety PLC. Blanking and muting require configuration via the Omron setup tool or DIP switches on the control box, depending on the variant. The IP65 enclosure means the connector end caps and cable glands are sealed; no additional panel-side protection is needed for washdown zones.
