Multi-axis machine controller with EtherCAT motion and EtherNet/IP enterprise connectivity
The Omron NX1021220 is the mid-range CPU in the NX1 series, offering 5 MB of program memory and 33.5 MB of data memory. This is a single-box controller that runs the real-time motion ring on EtherCAT while the HMI and upstream SCADA/MES talk EtherNet/IP on a separate port — no protocol converter, no gateway, no extra rack slot. The CPU handles up to 64 EtherCAT axes and supports the full PLCopen motion function blocks (MC_Power, MC_MoveAbsolute, MC_GearIn, etc.) in Sysmac Studio.
The NX102 uses an Intel Atom processor with a 1 ms cycle time floor for the primary task. For a packaging machine with eight servo axes, a registration mark sensor, and a reject gate, the NX102 runs the entire sequence — cam profiles, registration correction, IO mapping, and HMI refresh — inside a 2 ms scan with headroom.

When to choose the NX102 over the NX1P or NJ
The NX1021220 sits between the NX1P2 (1.5 MB, EtherCAT only) and the NJ501 (20 MB, full database connectivity). Choose the NX102 when:
- You need both EtherCAT motion and EtherNet/IP for the plant network — the NX1P2 has only one EtherNet/IP port and shares it with programming traffic.
- You have more than 16 axes or a tag database that exceeds 1.5 MB — the NX102's 5 MB of program space and 33.5 MB of data are the enabler.
- You want OPC UA server embedded in the controller — available as a firmware option on the NX102, not on the NX1P.
- You are retrofitting a legacy PLC and need to speak EtherNet/IP to existing Rockwell drives while adding EtherCAT servo axes — the NX102 does both natively.
