Omron F3SG Area Light Curtains for SEA Machinery Builders in 2026: IEC 62443-4-1 Sourcing Around Thailand's $43.6bn FDI Surge and Vietnam Smart Factory Growth
Thailand's foreign direct investment hit USD 43.6 billion in the first half of 2026. That number, reported by Corporate Counsel on July 23, is large enough that most of it was still being poured into concrete when it was announced — which means the machinery procurement wave it implies is peaking right now and into Q1 2027. NTT, Google, and hyperscaler competitors are building data center campuses across Thailand. Each facility needs hundreds of specialized machines: CNC machining centers, robotic palletizers, automated storage systems, precision assembly lines.
That matters for safety light curtains. Every automated machine frame needs Type 4 area protection on its operator access points. And for panel shops and machine builders in Southeast Asia targeting Thailand's buildout — or Vietnam's own smart factory expansion, which MarketsandMarkets tracked as double-digit CAGR toward 2030 — Omron's F3SG series is worth a closer look than it usually gets.
This piece covers what the F3SG family actually offers, which SKUs are in our catalog and at what scores, how EU Cyber Resilience Act obligations affect purchasing decisions, and what lead times look like through franchised distribution in Q3 2026.
The F3SG Series at a Glance
The F3SG is Omron's Type 4 area light curtain family. The series breaks into a few output types worth knowing:
F3SG-4RR[] — Relay output. These units output a simple on/off safety signal. They integrate with any safety relay or safety PLC without requiring a specific network or controller. For panel shops that still run hardwired safety circuits, these are the practical choice.
F3SG-4SR[] — Serial communications output. These talk to Omron's NX-SL safety controller (or third-party safety networks) via EtherCAT. The advantage is diagnostics: you get per-beam status, fault codes, and condition data rather than just a binary go/no-go signal. Useful if you're building Industry 4.0-ready equipment and want to log safety events.
F3SG-4RA[] — Relay output, advanced variant. Check specific SKUs for exact feature differences against the RR sub-family.
PLe models (suffix -02TS) — The -02TS suffix means ISO 13849-1 Performance Level e certification. If you're exporting machinery to the EU, PLe is effectively the required safety performance level under the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230. The -02TS models are the ones to use for EU-bound equipment.
All F3SG models carry IP67. That's relevant in SEA machining and assembly environments where coolant mist, metalworking fluid, and high humidity are constant.
Beam pitch determines what the curtain can detect:
- 14 mm beam pitch — Finger protection. Used on presses, shears, and any machinery where the hazardous opening could admit a finger. Required by ISO 13849-1 PLd minimum for those applications.
- 25 mm beam pitch — Hand protection. Used on larger access doors where only a hand (not a finger) could reach the hazard point.
Catalog Evidence: What F3SG SKUs We Stock
Our catalog lists 230 F3SG SKUs with aiDemandScores between 87.28 and 87.44. Those scores place the family in our key/premium tier — meaning there is genuine, active demand from buyers. Here are the anchor models:
| SKU | Score | Protective Height | Beam Pitch | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F3SG-4RR1920-14 | 87.44 | 1,920 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG-4RR1840-14 | 87.44 | 1,840 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG-4RR1600-14 | 87.36 | 1,600 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG-4RR1760-14 | 87.36 | 1,760 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG4SRB152025K | 87.28 | 1,520 mm | 25 mm (hand) | Serial |
| F3SG-4RR1840P25-02TS | 87.28 | 1,840 mm | 25 mm (hand) | Relay, PLe |
| F3SG-4RR1440-14 | 87.28 | 1,440 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG-4RR1520-14 | 87.28 | 1,520 mm | 14 mm (finger) | Relay |
| F3SG-4RR1760P25-02TS | 87.28 | 1,760 mm | 25 mm (hand) | Relay, PLe |
| F3SG-4RR1760-25 | 87.28 | 1,760 mm | 25 mm (hand) | Relay |
The 1,920 mm model covers full-height guard doors without stacking multiple units. That's a practical advantage on large hydraulic presses and automated storage retrieval systems — fewer seams, fewer failure points, less wiring.
The PLe variants (F3SG-4RR1840P25-02TS, F3SG-4RR1760P25-02TS) are the ones to specify for EU-bound machine builds. The EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 has its full cybersecurity enforcement phase from January 20, 2027, but EU importers are already asking for ISO 13849-1 PLe documentation in their technical files now.
MOQ is 1 across the family. You can quote a single unit for a prototype build or 500 units for a production run.
Why the EU CRA September 11 Deadline Changes Things for Safety Buyers
The EU Cyber Resilience Act's Article 10 reporting obligations went live September 11, 2026. This is a real change in what's required to sell machinery into the EU — not just a future concern.
The practical impact for SEA machine builders: if you're exporting to an EU customer or supplying a sub-assembly to an EU-based OEM, your customer can ask for documentation showing that the digital components in your machine meet baseline cybersecurity requirements. Safety light curtains with serial communications output are digital components. IEC 62443-4-1 is the relevant standard.
IEC 62443-4-1 certification for a product like F3SG covers three things:
- Secure development lifecycle — how Omron designed and maintains the firmware with security in mind
- Security integration — how the serial interfaces can be integrated into a secure control network architecture
- Vulnerability handling — Omron's process for patching security issues after sale
For procurement purposes, the document to ask your distributor for is the IEC 62443-4-1 Security Integration Guideline. That document is what your EU customer's technical file team needs to demonstrate CRA compliance. Most authorized Omron distributors in Singapore and Bangkok can provide it on request.
The EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 (full enforcement January 20, 2027) goes further than the CRA — it makes cybersecurity a condition of CE marking for machinery. But the IEC 62443-4-1 evidence you collect for the CRA covers most of what the Machinery Regulation requires at the component level.
Supply and Lead Times in Q3 2026
Safety light curtains have been under allocation pressure through franchised distributors in Q3 2026. The combination of sustained APAC infrastructure demand and the component complexity of precision optical systems has extended lead times.
Standard F3SG models through authorized distribution: 8 to 14 weeks. Serial output models run shorter (4 to 8 weeks) because they share more commonality with Omron's NX-platform controller ecosystem.
PLe relay output models have been running slightly longer due to the additional firmware certification required for ISO 13849-1 PLe compliance. Expect the upper end of the range for those.
Spot inventory at independent distributors covers the most commonly specified sizes — roughly 1,000 mm to 1,520 mm protective height. If you need 1,760 mm or 1,920 mm models, or any PLe variant, plan ahead. Forecast commitments to an authorized distributor unlock better allocation priority.
One practical note: if you're quoting EU-bound equipment and need the IEC 62443-4-1 documentation, factor in the time to get that from your distributor. It's not always in stock. Give yourself two to three weeks of buffer on top of the component lead time.
How to Pick the Right Model
Four questions to answer before you quote:
1. Guard door height. Full-height access (over 1,600 mm) — look at 1,760 mm and 1,920 mm models. Standard factory automation cells — 1,440 mm to 1,520 mm. Compact stations — smaller protective heights exist in the catalog, check your specific requirement.
2. Smallest hazard opening. If the gap between guard and machine is small enough for a finger, specify 14 mm beam pitch. If only a hand could fit, 25 mm beam pitch is sufficient and less expensive.
3. Controller type. If you have a hardwired safety relay or a legacy PLC without a safety network interface, relay output (F3SG-4RR[]) is the direct connection. If you're running an NX-SL safety controller or another EtherCAT-based safety network, serial output (F3SG-4SR[]) gives you diagnostics that aren't available from relay output units.
4. EU export? If yes, specify PLe (-02TS suffix). The ISO 13849-1 PLe certification is what your EU customer needs for the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 technical file. Without it, you may face a CE marking problem at customs.
What Else to Consider
Panasonic SF4D is the main competitor in this space. Panasonic Industry announced IEC 62443-4-1 ML2 certification back in July 2022, so they have a more mature documentation package for EU export projects. If your EU customer is asking specifically for ML2-level certification, the SF4D series is worth comparing. We covered the SF4D in detail in aoctrl.com article #123.
Omron NX-SL safety controller integrates directly with F3SG serial output models over EtherCAT. For machine builders using Omron NX platform PLCs, this gives a clean safety architecture from access point through safety controller to PLC network. The alternative — using relay output units with a separate safety relay — works fine but requires more discrete wiring.
For complete Type 4 safety systems (access point to safety relay to PLC), the F3SG serial models plus NX-SL plus an NX series PLC is the most streamlined Omron path.
The Bottom Line
Thailand's H1 2026 FDI number is not abstract. It's funding real factories with real machinery being built right now. The procurement window for safety components on those builds is open. The EU CRA September 11 deadline is also not abstract — it's already changing what EU-bound machine builders ask from their component suppliers.
The F3SG series has the catalog depth (230 SKUs), the scores (up to 87.44), and the EU regulatory documentation path (IEC 62443-4-1 + PLe) to be useful for both the Thailand machinery wave and EU export projects. Lead times are extended — quote early, and make sure your IEC 62443-4-1 documentation request is in early too.
