Overview
The 140DAO84220 is a Schneider Modicon Quantum automation platform AC discrete output module, order code 140DAO84220, delivering 16 isolated outputs arranged as 4 channels of 4 points each, rated for 20-56 V AC and 16 A switching current. It draws 1.85 W from the backplane and carries UL 508, CSA C22.2 No 142, and CE markings, with FM Class 1 Division 2 and cUL certifications for hazardous-location installations.
Each of the four groups of four outputs is isolated from the others and from the backplane, allowing independent AC loads on different phases or circuits. The module switches AC voltages from 20 to 56 V AC at up to 16 A per output, with a dv/dt rating of 400 V/ms that defines the maximum rate of voltage rise the output triacs can commutate without false triggering — critical when driving inductive loads such as contactors, solenoids, or small motors. Internal protection consists of an RC snubber across each output and a 5 A fuse per group; the module signals a blown fuse or loss of field power via dedicated fault LEDs. Sixteen green LEDs indicate individual output status, one green LED shows bus communication active, and one red LED flags an external fault. Addressing requires one output word in the Quantum backplane. The absolute maximum output withstands 100 Vrms for one cycle AC, 63 Vrms for 10 seconds AC, and 111 Vrms for 1.3 seconds AC — transient ratings that inform coordination with upstream protective devices during fault clearing.
Applications
The isolated groups suit applications mixing loads on different phases or requiring galvanic separation between safety-related and standard outputs, such as valve manifolds, alarm annunciators, and motor starter coils.
Within the Modicon Quantum range, the 140DAO84220 fills the niche for medium-current AC output groups — higher per-point current than the 140DAO84000C (which switches 1 mA signal-level loads) but fewer channels (4 groups vs. 16 individually isolated groups).
