4 kW at 480 V — HVAC duty cycle and supply sizing
The ATV21HU40N4 is a 4 kW Altivar 21 drive for 380-480 V three-phase supplies, drawing 6.4 A line current at 480 V and 8.1 A at 380 V. Apparent power is 6.9 kVA at 380 V, which sets the transformer and upstream breaker sizing for the branch circuit. Input voltage tolerance is -15/+10 % — the drive stays online through brownouts down to 323 V at the 380 V nominal. The integrated Class A EMC filter meets EN 61800-3 category C2 and C3, so for residential or lightly industrial environments you may need an external filter to reach category C1.
Switching frequency and thermal derating
Switching frequency is adjustable from 6 kHz to 16 kHz. Above 12 kHz a derating factor applies — at 16 kHz the continuous output current drops, so match the motor nameplate current at the chosen carrier frequency. The drive is assembled with a heat sink and mounts vertically ±10° for natural convection. Transient overtorque capability is 120 % of nominal motor torque for 60 seconds — enough for fan inertia starts or pump breakaway torque without oversizing the drive.
