22 kW VFD for asynchronous motors
The ATV21WD22N4 is a 22 kW Altivar 21 AC drive designed for three-phase asynchronous motors, accepting a 380-480 V supply with a -15% to +10% tolerance. At 380 V it draws 41.6 A line current; at 480 V that drops to 33.1 A, which matters when sizing branch circuit protection for the 480 V installs common in North American panels. Switching frequency is adjustable from 6 to 16 kHz, but above 8 kHz a derating factor applies — the 8-16 kHz band is where you trade motor noise for reduced continuous output current.
Panel fit and integration constraints
The drive measures 28.3 inches tall by 11.2 inches wide and 12.4 inches deep, with a vertical mounting requirement of ±10 degrees. The depth is the dimension that catches people out in shallow enclosures — 315 mm means a standard 400 mm deep cabinet leaves just 85 mm for wiring clearance behind the heat sink. Operating altitude is limited to 1000 m standard, with derating up to 3000 m — but the Corner Grounded distribution network restriction caps at 2000 m. Pollution degree 3 per IEC 61800-5-1 means it tolerates conductive pollution in industrial environments, but not direct washdown.
EMC compliance and communication options
A Class A EMC filter is integrated, meeting EN 61800-3 Category C3 for second environment (industrial) and Category C2 for first environment with additional mitigation. The drive also complies with EN 55011 Class A Group 1 — expect to add an external filter if the installation requires residential limits. Communication is via 2-wire RS-485 Modbus RTU at 9600 or 19200 bps, addressing up to 247 nodes. Optional communication cards support BACnet, LonWorks, Metasys N2, and APOGEE FLN for building management system integration — common in HVAC retrofit work where this drive sees heavy use.
