The Schneider Electric CR1F500MZ7 is a TeSys F magnetic latching contactor — 3-pole, 500 A rated operational current (Ie) in AC-3 duty, with a 220 V DC low-consumption latching coil. That latching behaviour is the key differentiator here: once pulsed to close, it stays closed magnetically; a separate unlatching pulse opens it. The coil consumption is 550 W DC for latching, 60 W DC for unlatching — not a continuous hold, just a pulse.
The headline rating is 500 A at <= 440 V in AC-3 (motor switching), but this contactor also carries AC-1 (resistive) and AC-4 (plugging/inching) utilisation categories. That means it's rated for the heavy inrush of a motor start and the occasional reverse or jog cycle, not just resistive heaters. The motor power table covers the range: 335 kW at 690 V, 295 kW at 440 V, 250 kW at 380–400 V, down to 147 kW at 220–230 V (all at 50/60 Hz). For UL/CSA installations, the horsepower ratings are 500 hp at 575–600 V, 400 hp at 460–480 V, 200 hp at 220–240 V, 150 hp at 200–208 V. That's a heavy-duty motor starter for a large pump, compressor, or conveyor drive. The rated insulation voltage (Ui) is 1000 V per IEC 60947-4, with an impulse withstand (Uimp) of 8 kV — so it's comfortable on 690 V systems and can handle transient spikes from nearby switching. The short-time withstand (Icw) is 4200 A for up to 10 seconds, which gives selectivity headroom for upstream breaker coordination. The rated breaking capacity is 5000 A at 220–440 V, dropping to 2500 A at 1000 V — that's the fault current it can interrupt without welding contacts. For fuse coordination, the guide recommends 500 A aM or 800 A gG/BS88 fuses at <= 440 V. The operating time is 40–80 ms latching, 50–100 ms unlatching — not a fast semiconductor switch, but typical for a large frame contactor. The maximum operating rate is 120 cycles per hour at 40 °C, so it's not meant for high-speed cycling. Mechanical durability is 1 million cycles, which is standard for this class. The average impedance per pole is 0.18 mOhm at 700 A thermal current (Ith), and power dissipation per pole is 45 W in AC-3, 88 W in AC-1 — that heat needs to be considered in a closed panel. The control voltage limits are 0.85 to 1.1 Uc for both latching and unlatching — so the 220 V DC coil will reliably operate between about 187 V and 242 V DC. The operating temperature range is -15 to 70 °C, storage -60 to 80 °C. It's rated for operation up to 3000 m altitude without derating. The protective treatment is TH (tropicalised, for humid environments). Connections are via lugs/ring terminals accepting up to 2 cables of 240 mm² each, or busbars up to 40 x 5 mm cross-section. Tightening torque is 35 N.m — substantial, so a torque wrench is needed.
The magnetic latching feature makes it suitable for applications where the coil must not be continuously energised — for example, in battery-backed or emergency circuits where holding power is limited, or in installations where a power loss must not drop out the contactor.
