It is rated for 40 A in AC-1 utilisation category at up to 415 V, making it a straight resistive-load switching part — heaters, ovens, incandescent lighting banks, or any load where inrush stays under 1.5× running current. What the AC-1 rating means for your BOM line
AC-1 is the utilisation category for resistive or slightly inductive loads — the contactor sees near-zero inrush and switches at power factor near unity. The 40 A figure at 415 V is the thermal current (Ith) under those conditions. If your load is a motor (AC-3) or a transformer (AC-6a), this contactor is not the right pick; in those categories the make/break current is far lower. For a resistive bank or a resistance heater string, this is the correct duty class and the rating is honest at 40 A.
