Schneider Electric LC2D Reversing Contactor — TeSys D with Mechanical Interlock

The Schneider LC2D series with over 630 variants provides factory-assembled reversing contactor pairs from the TeSys D family. Each LC2D unit consists of two LC1D contactors mounted on a common base plate with a mechanical interlock rocker arm that physically prevents both contactors from closing simultaneously — the essential safety feature for reversing motor applications.

Why the Mechanical Interlock Matters for Safety

If both forward and reverse contactors in a reversing motor circuit close simultaneously, phases L1 and L3 are shorted — a bolted fault with fault current limited only by the upstream protection device. Interlocking in PLC software alone provides no protection against a stuck PLC output, corrupted memory, or programming error. The LC2D's mechanical rocker arm interlock provides a physical barrier: only one contactor can be in the closed position regardless of the electrical signals applied to the coils.

Applications

  • Conveyor direction control: Reversible material handling conveyors in warehouses, airports, and manufacturing lines.
  • Hoist and crane lifting/lowering: Motor direction reversal for lifting (forward) and lowering (reverse) with mandatory mechanical interlock for safety.
  • Machine tool spindle reversal: Tapping cycles requiring forward (in-feed) and reverse (retraction) spindle rotation.
  • Motorized valve actuation: Open/close control on motor-operated valves in process industries.

LC2D vs Two LC1D + User-Assembled Interlock Kit

The LC2D is factory-assembled and type-tested as a complete unit — single part number, guaranteed coordination, zero assembly time. Two separate LC1D contactors plus the LA9D mechanical interlock kit require assembly labor and carry the risk of incorrect installation. For OEMs building standard panels in volume, the single part number and type-testing of the LC2D reduce sourcing complexity and assembly time.

Availability

LC2D reversing contactors: broadly stocked at Schneider Electric distributors worldwide. Standard coil voltages (24VDC, 230VAC) typically available same-day.
