40 A, 3-pole motor-protection MCCB with ETU350M trip unit
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA2140-5MN32-0DL0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) configured for motor protection, rated 40 A continuous current at 40 °C ambient. It carries a breaking capacity of 187 kA at 240 V, 121 kA at 415 V and 440 V, 75.6 kA at 500 V, and 17 kA at 690 V — covering most industrial line-to-line fault levels up to the 690 V tier. The ETU350M electronic trip unit provides adjustable overload and short-circuit protection with phase-failure detection, critical for three-phase motor circuits where a lost phase can burn a winding before the thermal overload responds.
What the ratings mean for fit
The 40 A rating is flat from 40 °C through 50 °C, then derates slightly to 38.4 A at 55 °C, 37.6 A at 60 °C, 36.8 A at 65 °C, and 36 A at 70 °C. For a panel that runs warm — say a 55 °C internal ambient — the breaker still holds 38.4 A continuous, so a 40 A motor FLA is fine as long as the actual load current stays under that derated ceiling. The 800 V rated insulation voltage (Ui) means the breaker is suitable for 690 V line-to-line systems common in European industrial plants. The 3VA2140-5MN32-0DL0 includes an undervoltage release (UVR) as standard, which drops the breaker if control voltage falls below the dropout threshold — a common requirement for safety circuits that need to guarantee a loss-of-voltage trip. The auxiliary contact set is 2 auxiliary switches + 1 trip alarm switch + 1 electrical alarm switch HQ, giving four discrete signals for PLC status feedback or remote annunciation.
Physical fit and integration
Dimensions are 105 mm wide, 181 mm high, and 86 mm deep. The 105 mm width is a standard 3-pole MCCB footprint for SENTRON 3VA2 frames, so it fits existing panel cutouts and busbar arrangements without modification. The depth of 86 mm leaves clearance behind the door for wiring and auxiliary connections.
