Panel-mount controller with universal input and heater fault detection
The Omron E5EC-TQX4D5M-008 is a 1/4 DIN panel-mount process and temperature controller from the E5EC-T series. It accepts a wide range of sensors — RTD, thermocouple types B, E, J, K, L, N, PLII, R, S, T, U, W, plus 0–20 mA and 0–10 VDC analog signals — making it a single SKU for mixed-sensor lines. The output stage is four relay contacts plus a voltage pulse for driving an external SSR. This split is useful when you need relay outputs for alarm or on/off stages and the SSR drive for a PID-controlled power loop — the SSR output switches faster and avoids relay contact wear on the modulating element. Heater fault detection is built in, not an add-on module. It monitors current draw on the load side and flags a broken heater element or open circuit — a common failure mode in electric furnaces, hot-runner systems, and packaging seal bars.
RS-485 Modbus and event input for supervisory control
RS-485 communications supports both Omron CompoWay/F and standard Modbus protocols. This lets the controller integrate into a PLC-based line control or a SCADA system without a protocol converter — the Modbus mapping is documented in the product manual. An event input is provided for external trigger — typically used to switch between pre-set temperature profiles, hold the PID loop during a recipe change, or reset the heater fault latch from a remote pushbutton. The tri-color LCD display shows three rows of four characters each. The large top row (18 mm) is the process value; the middle and bottom rows can show setpoint, output power, or heater current. Color changes (green, orange, red) per row give at-a-glance status without reading digits.
IP66 front panel and active lifecycle
The front panel is rated IP66, meaning it withstands hose-down and dust ingress when properly gasketed in the panel cutout. This is the standard for food, beverage, and washdown zones — the controller can be mounted directly on the machine face without a secondary enclosure. Supply voltage is 24 VAC/DC, which is common for industrial control panels. The wide tolerance means it works on either an AC control transformer or a DC power supply without rewiring.
