dv/dt suppression that protects motor windings
The VW3A5102 is a motor choke — an output filter that sits between the drive and the motor to limit the voltage rise rate (dv/dt) that stresses winding insulation. At 400 V it holds dv/dt to 500 V/µs max; at 690 V the limit rises to 1000 V/µs max. That range covers the common 400 V and 690 V industrial supply rails, so the same choke works across a 380–690 V drive output without swapping parts. Rated 48 A continuous, it matches drives in the 22–37 kW range at 400 V. The 250 W thermal loss is the heat it dumps into the cabinet — budget that into the panel ventilation calculation so the choke doesn't raise the internal ambient above its -10…50 °C operating limit.
Cable length limits per voltage class
Maximum motor cable length depends on voltage and whether the cable is shielded. At 380–480 V, shielded cable runs up to 85 m; unshielded goes to 95 m. At 500–690 V, shielded drops to 45 m, unshielded to 70 m. These limits are the choke's design envelope — exceeding them risks reflected-wave overvoltage at the motor terminals. The choke also includes a thermal protection switch that trips at 125 °C (for <250 V AC, <0.5 A). That's a hard cut-off if the choke overheats from overload or poor ventilation — it doesn't reset automatically, so plan for a manual reset in the fault-handling sequence.
Obsolete — sourced through independent channels
Schneider has marked the VW3A5102 as obsolete. No official successor is listed. For a line-down spare or a BOM fill, the part is available through independent surplus and broker channels — quantities are lot-specific and confirmed at RFQ. No pin-compatible direct replacement exists from the original manufacturer; a functional alternative would need a different order code and possibly a mounting adapter. Terminal connection accepts up to 10 mm² / AWG 6, tightening torque 1.5 N·m. The IP20 rating (with the VW3A9612/613 kits) or IP00 without means it's intended for enclosure mounting — not a standalone outdoor install.
