The SICK OD2-N30W04U2 is a 2D laser displacement sensor from the OD Value series, a compact profile-measurement head that uses a laser line to capture height, width, or gap profiles on a moving target. It's a chassis-mount unit with cable leads, so you bolt it to a bracket or machine frame and route the cable into the control cabinet — no connector to futz with on the sensor side. The IP67 rating means the housing and optics survive washdown and airborne dust, which is what you need on a conveyor line or a packaging machine where coolant mist or cleaning spray is just part of the day.
The installation distance is 26.0mm to 34.0mm, and the sensing window is ±4mm around that standoff — so at a 30mm mount height, it measures displacement from 26mm to 34mm off the sensor face. That ±4mm range is the measurement span, not the detection distance; the sensor needs to sit within that tight 8mm band to return valid profile data. The NPN output (open collector) pulls low when the target is within the measurement window, which is the standard interface for a PLC sinking input or a counter module. Supply is 12 ~ 24VDC, so it runs on common industrial 24V supplies without a separate regulator.
Integration note: mounting and wiring
Chassis mount with cable leads — no DIN-rail clip, no quick-disconnect. You'll need a mounting bracket or a drilled plate to hold it, and the cable runs directly to a terminal block or a M12 pigtail in the junction box. The IP67 seal is intact as long as the cable jacket isn't nicked; if you're running it through a conduit or a cable gland, keep the bend radius generous near the sensor body to avoid pulling the seal loose. Operating temperature is -10°C to 40°C, so it's fine for a conditioned plant floor but not a freezer or an oven line.
