The SICK UM12-1172211 is an ultrasonic proximity sensor from the UM12 series, with a PNP normally-open output and a sensing range adjustable from 20 mm to 150 mm. It's built for non-contact presence detection of solids and liquids — level monitoring in tanks, object presence on conveyors, or loop-control in web handling. The 30 Hz switching frequency means it updates every 33 ms, fast enough for most material-handling lines but not for high-speed counting or pick-and-place cycles that need sub-10 ms response.
The 150 mm maximum range is the blind-free window — the sensor ignores targets closer than 20 mm, so the mounting bracket must stand the face off at least that far from the nearest object. Brass-nickel housing with PBT sensing face survives splash and washdown; IP65/IP67 means it handles hose-directed water (IP65) and temporary immersion (IP67), so it's suited for food-processing washdown zones or outdoor installation under cover.
Integration note — wiring and mounting
Termination is a standard M12 4-pin male connector — mates to any M12 cordset, no special tooling. The PNP output sinks current when the target is detected; verify the load side is pulled up to the same 10–30 VDC supply. The brass barrel threads directly into an M12 mounting bracket or through-hole; no adapter plate needed. IP67 seal relies on the mating connector being torqued to the manufacturer's spec — hand-tight is not enough for washdown.
