What this reversing contactor assembly delivers
The Siemens 3RA2317-8XB11-1BB4 is a factory-assembled SIRIUS reversing contactor — two 3RT2017-1BB42 contactors mechanically interlocked on a common baseplate, wired for direction reversal. The 24 VDC coil pulls in reliably across the rated control voltage range. Rated 5.5 kW at 400 V AC-3 and 11 A at 480 V, it handles reversing duty on three-phase induction motors up to that load — conveyors, hoists, pumps, any application where forward/reverse is the sequence. The S00 frame keeps the footprint tight at 90 mm wide, 68 mm tall, 73 mm deep, and the screw and snap-on mounting onto 35 mm standard mounting rail fits standard panel layouts.
Minimum clearance around the unit: 6 mm upwards, forwards, downwards, and to the side; 0 mm backwards (–). That zero-backwards clearance means it can sit flush against a panel backplate — useful in crowded enclosures. Main circuit connections are screw-type terminals; the magnet coil also terminates at screw-type terminals. Wire sizes accepted: solid or stranded 2x (0.5…1.5 mm²), 2x (0.75…2.5 mm²), and 2x 4 mm². AWG equivalents for main contacts are 2x (20…16) and 2x (18…14).
Duty ratings and mechanical endurance
Beyond the AC-3 motor-switching rating, the assembly carries AC-4 ratings for reversing and inching duty: 4 kW at 400 V. Horsepower equivalents span 1.5 hp at 200/208 V up to 10 hp at 575/600 V (–). The contactor typical mechanical life is 10,000,000 operations — that's the mechanical endurance of the contactor block itself, not the load-switching electrical life which depends on the switched current. Shock resistance is rated at 11.4g for 5 ms and 7.3g for 10 ms on both AC and DC axes.
