At 5 mm nominal sensing range, this sensor is sized for close-proximity detection of metal objects — think cam followers, valve positions, or part-present on a conveyor. The inductive principle means it's immune to dust and non-metallic debris, but it's still noise till proven otherwise: run the cable shielded and grounded at the controller end, especially if there's a VFD in the same panel. The short range keeps false triggers down, but it also means the target gap needs to be tight and repeatable.
