What it is and what it does
The Siemens 3RK1322-0GS02-0AA3 is an AS-i compact direct starter — a self-contained motor starting and protection unit for direct-on-line (DOL) control of small induction motors up to 0.18 kW at 400 V AC-3 duty. It combines an electromechanical switching contact, bimetal motor protection, and short-circuit protection via circuit-breakers in a single IP65 enclosure, ready for field-mounting near the motor rather than in a central panel. Rated for a setting range of 0.45 to 0.63 A, the bimetal overload relay is factory-matched to the motor full-load current within that band. The integrated motor brake output (400 V AC) handles the brake coil directly, saving an external contactor. Two integrated digital inputs allow local pushbuttons or sensor signals to be wired without an extra I/O block.
Where it fits — panel and field
The IP65 enclosure (270 x 120 x 190 mm) allows the starter to be mounted directly on the machine frame or in a field junction box, close to the motor. This eliminates the need for a separate control cabinet for small motor groups — a common approach on conveyor sections, packaging lines, or material-handling stations where distributed I/O and motor control are preferred. Communication is via AS-interface (AS-i), not PROFIBUS DP. The unit acts as an AS-i slave, reporting motor status and accepting start/stop commands over the two-wire AS-i cable. The 9-pole motor outgoing feeder and 9-pole power connection are tab-terminals, so pre-assembled cables or field wiring with ferrules can be used.
Key ratings — what they mean for selection
The 50 kA short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu) at 400 V means this starter can safely interrupt a fault current up to 50 kA without upstream fuses or breakers needing to clear the fault first. That is a high SCCR for a compact unit — it allows the starter to be used in installations with high available fault current, common in industrial plant distribution. The operating temperature range of -25 to +55 °C covers most indoor and outdoor European plant conditions, including unheated warehouses and refrigerated areas. The IP65 rating means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets — suitable for washdown areas in food processing or wet environments.
