What this part is and what it does
The Siemens 3RK1322-1HS02-0AA1 is an AS-Interface compact direct starter from the SIRIUS family, designed for direct-on-line motor starting in distributed automation layouts. It combines a bimetal motor protection relay, electromechanical switching contacts, and circuit-breaker-based short-circuit protection into one IP65 enclosure — meaning it lives right at the motor, not in a central panel. The setting range spans 5.5 A to 8 A, and at AC-3 duty (motor starting) on a 400 V line it delivers 3 kW. That AC-3 rating is the one that governs real motor switching — the part is sized for a 3 kW induction motor on a 400 V three-phase supply. The short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu) at 400 V is 50 000 A, so it can interrupt fault currents up to that level without upstream devices needing to clear the fault first. It communicates over AS-Interface protocol, not PROFIBUS DP, and includes a motor brake output rated 24 V DC / 3 A. The two integrated inputs let you wire limit switches or pushbuttons directly into the starter without a separate I/O block. The main current circuit connects via tab terminals — a fast, tooled connection typical for decentralized motor feeders.
Where it goes and how it fits
This is a decentralized motor starter — it mounts directly on the machine frame or conveyor section, not inside a control cabinet. The IP65 rating means the housing and all connections withstand hose-directed water and dust ingress, so it can live on the plant floor in washdown zones or dusty environments. The operating temperature range of -25 °C to +55 °C covers most production hall conditions, including cold storage areas at the low end. Dimensions are 270 mm high, 120 mm wide, 190 mm deep — roughly the size of a small junction box. The tab terminals for the main circuit mate with standard 6.3 mm or 9.5 mm receptacles, common on motor cables with pre-terminated leads. The AS-Interface bus cable drops in via the integrated bus communication function, so the only field wiring is the motor cable, the AS-i flat cable, and the 24 V DC supply for the brake.
