What this module does in the AS-Interface network
The Siemens 3RK7271-1AA30-0AA0 is an AS-Interface data decoupling unit designed as a 30 mm communication module for the SIMATIC S7-1200 PLC family. It sits between the AS-Interface power supply and the AS-i network, decoupling the data signal from the 24 V DC power rail so the PLC can communicate on the yellow AS-i cable without interference. It accepts a 21–32 V DC input (24 V DC nominal) and supplies up to 120 W of active power, with a maximum input current of 4.1 A and a maximum output current of 4 A. That 4 A output feeds the AS-i bus and any powered slaves downstream. The module supports both grounded and non-grounded AS-i networks and includes ground fault detection — a useful diagnostic when you're chasing intermittent faults on a long bus run.
Mounting and panel fit — DIN rail or wall
Fastens onto 35-mm DIN rail or mounts directly to a panel backplate using the plug-in flaps on the housing. The 30 mm width and 75 mm depth keep it compact — it takes up one standard S7-1200 module slot width on the rail. Mounting position can be vertical or horizontal, which gives flexibility in tight cabinets. IP20 protection class means it belongs inside a sealed enclosure — not exposed to washdown or dust. Wire termination accepts 0.2–3.3 mm² solid conductors (24–16 AWG) with core end processing. The three-terminal layout handles the AS-i power in, AS-i power out, and the data coupling connection.
Protection and diagnostics built in
Short-circuit protection is electronic, and the single AS-Interface output is short-circuit proof — meaning a fault on the bus won't take out the module itself. It auto-resets after the fault clears, so a momentary short on the yellow cable doesn't require a manual power cycle. Three LEDs on the front panel give status: EFD (earth fault detection), ASI OL (AS-Interface overload), and DIAG (general diagnostic). If the DIAG LED is solid, the module has power and is communicating — if it's flashing, you've got a bus fault or a missing slave. Operating temperature range is 0–55 °C, storage from -40–70 °C, with up to 95% relative humidity at 25 °C. That covers most indoor industrial cabinets without active cooling.
What this module is NOT — safety circuit warning
This unit is explicitly not suitable for use in safety-related circuits. If you're building a safety AS-i network with a safety monitor, you need a different decoupling module or a separate safety-rated power supply. The 3RK7271-1AA30-0AA0 is for standard AS-Interface data decoupling only. It has no external reset input, no reset function, no sequential time-delay, and no test function for signaling contacts. The auto-reset on short-circuit is its only automatic recovery feature. The 0.05 A rating at DC-13 (24 V) applies to any auxiliary signaling contacts — this is a very low switching capacity, so don't plan on driving loads directly from the module's signal path.
Lifecycle and sourcing — active production
The reference code per EN 61346-2 is 'A', which maps to the AS-Interface system function in the standard equipment designation scheme. This matters for documentation traceability if your panel drawings follow that standard.
