What it is and what it does
The Siemens 3RT1017-1BW41 is a SIRIUS power contactor in the compact size S00 frame. It is designed for switching motor loads in control panels and industrial machinery, with a 24 VDC coil and screw-type terminals for the main current circuit. Its AC-3 motor rating reaches 5.5 kW at both 500 V and 690 V, meaning it can handle 3-phase induction motors up to that power at those line voltages. The AC-4 reversing/inching rating is 8.5 A at 400 V, which governs frequent jogging or plugging duty cycles. The DC coil draws 3.3 W for both closing and holding, so the control transformer or PLC output must supply that continuously. The operating range is 0.85 to 1.1 times the rated voltage, which for a 24 VDC coil means it picks up at about 20.4 V and holds through 26.4 V.
Mounting and integration
Mounts via screw or snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 50022. The 45 mm width and 57.5 mm height fit standard S00 panel layouts; depth is 72 mm, which clears most shallow enclosures. Side-by-side mounting is permitted, with a 6 mm clearance to adjacent devices on the side. The front face carries IP20 finger-safe protection; the terminals are also rated IP20. Pollution degree 3 means it tolerates conductive dust in industrial atmospheres without conformal coating. Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C, with a maximum altitude of 2000 m without derating. The mechanical endurance is 30 million operations typical, so it outlasts most machinery lifecycles in normal switching service.
Wiring and protection
Screw terminals accept 2x (0.5 to 1.5 mm²), 2x (0.75 to 2.5 mm²), or up to 2x (0.75 to 4 mm²) solid or stranded conductors. AWG equivalents are 2x (20 to 16), 2x (18 to 14), and 1x 12. Strip length and torque follow standard Siemens S00 practice. For short-circuit protection, Type 1 coordination requires a gL/gG fuse rated 35 A; Type 2 coordination requires 20 A. The contactor carries one normally open instantaneous auxiliary contact for feedback or interlocking. The reference code per DIN EN 81346-2 is Q, which maps to power switching equipment in schematic and parts-list documentation.
Lifecycle and sourcing
For a BOM freeze or panel design, the 3RT1017-1BW41 is a stable order code with consistent terminal numbering and macro support across the SIRIUS platform.
