What it is and what it does
The Siemens SIRIUS 3RT1017-1HB41 is a size S00 power contactor with a 24 VDC coil, designed for switching motor loads in control panels. Its AC-3 rating at 400 V is 5.5 kW, meaning it handles the high inrush of a standard induction motor during start-up. At 690 V it also carries 5.5 kW, so the motor current, not voltage, is the limiting factor here. For reversing or plugging duty (AC-4), it is rated 8.5 A at 400 V.
Mounting and integration
Mounts via screw or snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per EN 50022. The 45 mm width and 72 mm depth fit standard enclosure layouts; side-by-side mounting is allowed with a 6 mm clearance to adjacent devices. IP20 on the front and at the terminals means it is protected against finger contact but not washdown — suitable for enclosed panels only.
Coil and control circuit
The 24 VDC coil draws 2.3 W for both closing and holding, so the control transformer or PLC output only needs to supply that steady load. The contactor's auxiliary contact is a single instantaneous make/break (1 NO or 1 NC depending on variant — here it is a single contact block). For switching smaller loads on the auxiliary, the rated operating current at AC-12 (resistive) is 10 A maximum.
Protection and coordination
For Type 2 coordination (no damage to the contactor after a short circuit), a gL/gG fuse rated 20 A is required upstream. For Type 1 coordination (contactor may need replacement after a fault), a 35 A fuse is allowed. The pollution degree is 3 (conductive pollution or dry non-conductive that becomes conductive), which is typical for industrial control panels. Mechanical service life is 30 million operations.
Wiring and terminations
Main current circuit terminals are screw-type, accepting solid or stranded conductors: 2x 0.5–1.5 mm², 2x 0.75–2.5 mm², or max 2x 0.75–4 mm². AWG equivalents are 2x 20–16, 2x 18–14, and 1x 12. Ambient operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C.
