What it is and where it fits
The Siemens 3RT1017-2BM41 is a SIRIUS power contactor in the Size S00 frame, rated for switching motor loads up to 5.5 kW at 500 V or 690 V (AC-3 duty). The 24 VDC coil draws 3.3 W holding power, and the main contacts are spring-loaded terminals accepting 2x (0.25 to 2.5 mm²) solid or stranded wire. It mounts via screw or snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per EN 50022, making it a direct fit into standard control panels.
Key ratings and what they mean for your panel
The AC-3 motor-switching rating of 5.5 kW at 500 V and 690 V tells you this contactor handles three-phase induction motors up to that power — common for small pumps, fans, and conveyors. For resistive loads (AC-1), the maximum operating current is 10 A at 400 V. The AC-4 rating (8.5 A at 400 V) covers reversing or inching duty where the contactor makes and breaks stalled-rotor current. The coil holds at 24 VDC nominal; the 3.3 W holding power means a standard 24 VDC power supply can drive multiple contactors without excessive load. The IP20 rating on the front (and on the terminals) means the contactor is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm — fingers won't reach live parts — but it is not sealed against moisture. Install it inside a panel with at least IP54 enclosure for washdown or outdoor environments. The operating temperature range of -25 to +60 °C covers most industrial floor conditions, but side-by-side mounting (allowed) requires derating if ambient exceeds 40 °C — the datasheet thermal curve applies.
Mounting and wiring notes
Snap it onto 35 mm DIN rail per EN 50022 — no tools needed. The spring-loaded terminals accept 0.25 to 2.5 mm² (24 to 14 AWG) solid or stranded, with a strip length of about 8 mm. Side-by-side mounting is allowed, saving panel width. The Size S00 footprint (45 mm wide, 60 mm tall, 73 mm deep) fits standard 200 mm deep enclosures with room for wiring ducts.
