SIRIUS S00 power contactor — 5.5 kW AC-2 at 400 V, spring-loaded terminals
The Siemens 3RT1017-2BM42 is a SIRIUS power contactor in frame size S00, rated for 5.5 kW motor load in AC-2 duty at 400 V. That AC-2 rating covers wound-rotor motors and reversing applications where the contactor makes and breaks at reduced current — not full locked-rotor. For plugging or inching duty, the AC-4 rating of 8.5 A at 400 V is the figure to size against. Main circuit termination uses spring-loaded terminals, accepting 2x (0.25... 2.5 mm²) solid or stranded conductors. That saves a screwdriver turn per connection on the panel line, but verify your ferrule size — the upper limit is 2.5 mm² per conductor. Mounts via screw and snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per EN 50022. The 45 mm width leaves room for a three-phase contactor plus an auxiliary block.
Mounting and integration — DIN rail, spacing, and coordination
Side-by-side mounting is permitted, with 6 mm clearance at the side for heat dissipation. The IP20 rating on the front and terminals means the contactor is protected against finger contact but not washdown — keep it inside a panel with at least IP54 enclosure. For type 2 coordination (no damage to the contactor on a short circuit), the required upstream fuse is gL/gG 20 A. Type 1 coordination (contactor may need replacement after fault) allows a 35 A gL/gG fuse. Both values assume the main circuit is protected per IEC 60947-4-1. Coil consumption is 3.3 W DC for both closing and holding — a single-supply DC coil that doesn't spike on pickup. That simplifies the DC supply sizing in a 24 VDC control circuit.
Lifecycle and sourcing — active production, no end-of-life notice
This contactor is a direct drop-in for any panel originally specified with the 3RT1017-2BM42. The spring-loaded terminals and DIN-rail footprint match the existing layout.
Ratings and environmental limits — what they mean for the panel
Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C, which covers most indoor industrial enclosures without derating. Pollution degree 3 means the contactor is rated for conductive pollution environments — typical for factory floors with dust and humidity — but not for direct chemical exposure. Maximum operating altitude is 2 000 m without derating. Above that, the air dielectric and cooling capacity drop; consult the thermal derating curve if your installation is above 2 000 m. Mechanical life is typical 30 000 000 operations — that's the mechanical endurance, not the electrical life under load. Electrical life depends on the switching duty (AC-1, AC-3, AC-4) and the switched current; for AC-2 at 5.5 kW, expect significantly fewer operations before contact wear.
