The AC-1 maximum operating rate of 1 200 cycles per hour suits resistive loads like heaters; AC-3 maxes at 1 000 cycles/h for standard motor starts; AC-4 drops to 300 cycles/h for plugging or inching duty where the contactor breaks full locked-rotor current. Coil operates on 50/60 Hz, with an operating range of 0.8 to 1.1 times rated voltage at 50 Hz and 0.85 to 1.1 at 60 Hz. These timings matter for coordination with upstream short-circuit protection — the contactor must clear a fault before the breaker or fuse can open, or the contacts may weld.
