What it is and what it does
The Siemens 3RT1036-1AN60 is a SIRIUS power contactor in the S2 frame size, designed for switching motor loads in industrial control panels. It is rated for 30 kW at 500 V and 22 kW at AC-2 duty at 400 V, which covers the bulk of standard induction motor applications in that power band. The contactor mounts via screw or snap-on onto a 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 50022, and its 55 mm width and 112 mm height fit a standard panel layout. The 115 mm depth leaves clearance for wiring and auxiliary blocks.
Key ratings and what they mean for fit
The AC-2 rating of 22 kW at 400 V is the one that governs most slip-ring motor or wound-rotor applications — AC-2 duty involves starting and switching off at rated load, so the contactor's arc-chamber and contact material are sized for that stress. The AC-3 rating (not explicitly listed here but implied by the S2 frame class) would cover standard squirrel-cage motors, where switching occurs at starting current only. Wiring terminals accept solid conductors up to 4 mm² per clamp (2x 0.75...4 mm² max) and stranded up to 25 mm² (2x 0.75...25 mm²), which covers the power feed for a 22 kW motor on a 4–6 mm² cable. The screw-type main terminals are straightforward for panel builders — no special tooling needed. The contactor carries a degree of pollution 3 rating, meaning it's suitable for industrial environments with conductive dust or occasional condensation — typical for a non-sealed panel. The IP20 front protection means the terminals are finger-safe once wired, but the body itself is IP00 (open), so it must live inside an enclosure.
Lifecycle and sourcing reality
For a BOM line that was specified around the 3RT1036-1AB00 (the DC-coil variant), this 1AN60 (AC-coil, 50/60 Hz) will not drop in without a coil voltage change — the mechanical footprint and terminal layout are identical, but the coil driver circuit must match. If your panel was built for 24 VDC coil control, the 1AN60 won't work without rewiring the coil supply.
Integration and mounting
Snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per EN 50022 — no tools for the rail, but the screw terminals need a screwdriver. Side-by-side mounting is permitted, which saves panel width when ganging multiple contactors for a star-delta or reversing starter. Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C, storage from -55 to +80 °C. That covers most indoor panel environments; if the panel sits near a furnace or in a desert enclosure, watch the 60 °C ceiling.
