SIRIUS S2 power contactor — what it is and what it handles
The Siemens 3RT1036-1AR04 is a SIRIUS S2-size power contactor with screw-type terminals on the main current circuit. Rated for 22 kW at 400 V in AC-2 duty (slip-ring motor starting) and 41 A in AC-4 duty (plugging/inching), it covers the motor-switching range that sits between the smaller S0 and the larger S3 frames. The AC-4 rating of 41 A at 400 V matters because that duty class sees the heaviest contact wear — reversing, jogging, or braking. If your line has frequent reversals on a conveyor or hoist, this is the rating that governs contact life, not the AC-3 number. Coil pickup and dropout timing is 7 to 20 ms at AC; arcing time runs 10 to 15 ms. That means the contactor clears fast enough for most safety circuits that don't require a dedicated safety relay, but verify your PLC cycle time if you're monitoring the aux contact for feedback.
Mounting and wiring — fits standard DIN rail, terminal details
Snaps onto 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 50022 — screw and snap-on fastening. At 55 mm wide and 112 mm tall, it leaves room alongside an overload relay or busbar system in a standard enclosure. Side-by-side mounting is allowed, so no forced spacing gaps. Terminals accept solid conductors up to 2x 4 mm² (max) and stranded up to 2x 25 mm². The minimum solid is 0.5 mm² — fine for control wiring. Stranded minimum is 0.75 mm². Stripping and crimping are standard; no special tooling needed. IP20 on the front face means it's touch-safe for panel wiring; the terminal area is IP00, so live parts are exposed when the cover is off. Keep fingers and tools clear during live work.
Environmental and compliance
Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C; storage from -55 to +80 °C. Pollution degree 3 — suitable for industrial environments with conductive dust or occasional condensation. RoHS compliance date listed as May 1, 2012 — the part meets the EU RoHS substance restrictions. No REACH or UL cert is explicitly stated in the spec record, but the SIRIUS series typically carries UL/CSA marks; confirm with the supplier if your panel requires a specific listing.
