That 40 A figure governs the auxiliary contact chain, not the main poles — the main circuit's switching capacity is defined by voltage-specific curves: 10 A at 24 V, 6 A at 230 V, 3 A at 400 V, and 1 A at 440 V. So for a 400 V motor circuit, the contactor's real current limit is 3 A, not 40 A. The coil pulls 15 VA at 50 Hz and holds at 24 VDC; arcing time sits between 10 and 15 ms, which matters for coordination with upstream fuses or breakers.
The vertical mounting surface can be rotated ±180° or tilted ±30° front-to-back, so panel layout constraints are manageable. Side-by-side mounting is allowed, which keeps the rail footprint tight. Wire entry accepts solid conductors from 0.5 to 4 mm² (2x per terminal) and stranded up to 25 mm² (2x). That stranded range covers typical motor feeder cables up to about 4 AWG.
