SIRIUS S3 power contactor — what it is and where it fits
The Siemens 3RT2046-3AP00 is a SIRIUS-branded power contactor in the S3 frame size, designed for switching motor loads in industrial control panels. It carries a rated operational current of 96 A at 480 V in AC-3 duty, which is the standard motor-switching category per IEC 60947-4-1 — so this contactor handles three-phase induction motors up to that current without welding the main contacts on inrush. The coil termination uses spring-type terminals, not screw clamps — that means you push the wire in and the spring holds it, no torque driver needed. The main power circuit accepts solid wire from 2.5 to 16 mm² or stranded from 6 to 70 mm², giving flexibility for both panel wiring and motor feeder cables.
Mounting and clearances for panel integration
Mounts via screw or snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 60715 — the snap-on feature saves a screwdriver if you're populating a rail in volume. The contactor footprint is 70 mm wide, 140 mm tall, 152 mm deep, so it occupies three standard DIN modules of width. Minimum clearances to adjacent metalwork: 10 mm upwards, 10 mm downwards, 20 mm forwards, and 10 mm at the side. Those gaps matter for arc flash containment and heat dissipation in a packed enclosure — I'm not cramming that in there without the 20 mm forward clearance for the arc chute. The mounting position allows +/-180° rotation on a vertical surface and can be tilted forward/backward by +/-22.5° on a vertical surface. That flexibility helps when the DIN rail is oriented differently in the cabinet.
Duty-cycle and switching frequency limits
Maximum switching frequency varies by duty category: 900 operations per hour in AC-1 (resistive loads), 850/h in AC-3 (motor starting/running), 350/h in AC-2 (slip-ring motors), and 250/h in AC-4 (plugging/inching). For a conveyor line running frequent start-stop cycles, stay under the AC-4 ceiling — exceed it and the main contacts wear faster than the 10 million-cycle mechanical life would suggest. Arcing time is 10 to 20 ms, with a make time of 10 to 21 ms at AC. That's normal for a contactor this size — the arc chute extinguishes quickly enough to avoid nuisance trips from upstream short-circuit protection.
Environmental limits and auxiliary switch
Rated for operation from -25°C to +60°C ambient, with storage from -55°C to +80°C. The contactor includes an auxiliary switch — the main contacts have a 10 to 2 configuration, meaning 10 normally-open and 2 normally-closed auxiliary contacts, which is enough for feedback to a PLC or to interlock a reversing starter.
Sourcing and lifecycle status
Lifecycle stage is listed as current production — the 3RT2046-3AP00 is still an active Siemens catalog line, not a phase-out or NRND part. Quoted to order against the BOM quantity through independent distribution; availability and current pricing confirmed at RFQ time.
