SIRIUS S3 power contactor — 96 A at 480 V AC-3
The Siemens 3RT2047-1AF04 is a SIRIUS S3 power contactor rated 96 A at 480 V in AC-3 duty, which means it switches three-phase motor loads up to that current under standard starting conditions — the rating that governs the real-world motor branch circuit, not the AC-1 resistive figure. The contactor carries an auxiliary switch as standard and terminates via screw-type terminals on the magnet coil. Main circuit wiring accepts stranded conductors from 6 to 70 mm² and solid conductors from 2.5 to 16 mm², with the coil terminals accepting 2x (0.5... 1.5 mm²) or 2x (0.75... 2.5 mm²) solid or stranded. Mounting is via screw or snap-on onto 35 mm standard DIN rail per DIN EN 60715. The mounting position allows +/-180° rotation on a vertical surface and +/-22.5° tilt forward/backward, giving panel builders flexibility in tight enclosures.
Mechanical and electrical endurance — switching duty cycles
The contactor is rated for 10,000,000 typical mechanical operations. Electrical endurance varies by duty: 900 operations/hour maximum in AC-1, 850 in AC-3, 350 in AC-2, and 200 in AC-4. For AC-3e duty the maximum is also 850 operations/hour. Arcing time is 10 to 20 ms, with a closing time of 10 to 21 ms at AC. The power factor at 50 Hz is 0.38. These figures inform coordination with upstream protection devices and downstream contactors in reversing or star-delta configurations.
Environmental limits and clearance requirements
Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C; storage range is -55 to +80 °C. Minimum clearances to adjacent components: 10 mm upwards, 10 mm downwards, 20 mm forwards, and 10 mm at the side. These clearances must be maintained for proper heat dissipation and arc containment. Dimensions are 70 mm width, 140 mm height, and 195 mm depth. The depth figure is critical for enclosure depth planning — a 200 mm deep enclosure leaves only 5 mm clearance behind the contactor.
