96 A at 480 V — what that means for the motor circuit
The 3RT2047-3AP00: The 96 A at 480 V rating is the AC-3e making/breaking capacity for squirrel-cage motors — this is the number that governs whether the contactor holds in during a motor start and clears on a stall. For a 480 V motor drawing 96 A full-load, the contactor's electrical life under AC-3e duty is 850 switching cycles per hour maximum. The S3 frame size places this in the middle of the SIRIUS contactor family — physically 70 mm wide, 140 mm high, 152 mm deep. That depth matters when you're laying out a panel with a 200 mm enclosure depth: the contactor plus forward clearance of 20 mm and wiring bend radius eats into the usable space.
Wiring termination and clearance — panel integration
Main power terminals accept solid wire 2.5 to 16 mm² or stranded 6 to 70 mm². The spring-type coil terminals take 2x (0.5 to 2.5 mm²) solid or stranded — no screw torque to verify on the coil circuit, which saves a step during panel wiring. Mounting is screw or snap-on onto 35 mm DIN rail per DIN EN 60715. Clearance requirements: 10 mm upwards, 10 mm downwards, 10 mm at the side, 20 mm forwards. The mounting position allows +/-180° rotation on a vertical surface and +/-22.5° tilt forward/backward — useful when the contactor sits on a swing-out panel or a DIN rail at an angle.
Switching duty and operating envelope
Maximum switching rates vary by duty: 900 cycles/h for AC-1 resistive loads, 850 for AC-3 and AC-3e motor duty, 350 for AC-2 slip-ring motors, and 200 for AC-4 plugging/inching duty. The arcing time is 10 to 20 ms with an AC operating time of 10 to 21 ms. Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C; storage range is -55 to +80 °C. The auxiliary switch is included with a typical mechanical life of 10 million operations. For the main contacts, the rated operational current at 24 V is 10 A, tapering to 0.3 A at 220 V and 3 A at 400 V.
